Healthy Lifestyle Tips for Students

As a student, you may find it difficult to eat healthy and exercise regularly when you are busy studying for classes, extracurricular activities and social engagements. Maintaining healthy habits such as eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly and getting enough sleep will help maximize your ability to respond to the stressors of college.

Diet:

You may find the fast food and vending machine options on college campus to be more convenient, particularly if you do not have time. Consuming a diet focused on nutrient-rich produce, whole grains, lean protein and healthy fat will provide you with the necessary energy to keep you alert and mentally focused throughout your day. Preparing food ahead of time to take with you can help you avoid the temptation of fast food. Sandwiches or pizza are good meal options, while fruit, cut-up vegetables, mixed nuts and string cheese are healthy snack options.

Exercise:

Regular exercise increases aerobic capacity and improves muscle strength. It also provides stress relief, improves your ability to concentrate in you studies and enhances your mood. Many colleges have group-fitness classes and intramural sports, which may further motivate you to stay active. If you still struggle to maintain a formal exercise routine, use active forms of transportation such as walking or cycling to increase your activity level.

Sleep:

Lack of sleep is common among college students due to extra pressure of study, but sufficient sleep is important for maintaining your energy levels, strengthening your immune system, thinking clearly and improving your mood as well as it improves your remembering power. Create an environment conductive to sleep by setting a consistent bedtime, creating a relaxing nighttime routine and avoiding caffeine, nicotine and alcohol within three to four hours of going to bed.
